UK Assumes Leadership of Multinational Force Supporting Ukraine

Lieutenant General Tom Bateman has officially assumed command of the multinational force designated for deployment to Ukraine following the cessation of hostilities, succeeding his French predecessor. This transition comes as the Coalition of the Willing gears up for exercises aimed at rehearsing the deployment of this force.

The handover ceremony took place at the operational headquarters in Paris, where Lieutenant General Bateman took command of the Multinational Force Ukraine (MNF-U). This event is significant, especially in light of the recent reaffirmation by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine and its leadership role alongside France within the Coalition of the Willing.

Preparation for Future Operations

Last week, leaders from the UK, France, and other nations within the Coalition of the Willing announced that the MNF-U would conduct exercises in the forthcoming months to demonstrate its operational readiness once hostilities have concluded. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting MP emphasised the importance of Ukraine’s frontline in the defence of freedom and democracy, stating, “Our commitment to supporting Ukraine—both in the fight now and in preparation for securing the peace we wish to see—remains steadfast and will not waver. We are proud to take command of this multinational force, which exemplifies the leading role we will continue to play in supporting our Ukrainian friends.”

Lieutenant General Bateman is a highly regarded officer, having demonstrated military leadership on both national and international stages. His command is expected to bolster efforts aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s future security.

Strategic Goals of the MNF-U

In the event of peace, the MNF-U is poised to provide reassurance to Ukraine by enhancing the safety of its skies and seas and revitalising its land forces. As part of these efforts, a headquarters will be established in Kyiv to facilitate operations. With over 30 years of military service, Lieutenant General Bateman has held various significant positions, including Commander of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters, which enables rapid responses to global crises and conflicts, as well as Commander of the British Army’s 1st Division.

Upon taking command, Lieutenant General Bateman remarked, “It is a privilege to assume command of the MNF-U here at its Operational Headquarters in Paris. Building on the excellent work of my predecessor and his multinational team, we will continue to collaborate closely with our Ukrainian and international partners to prepare a force that will support a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

Commitment to Long-Term Security

In light of ongoing Russian aggression towards Ukraine, the MNF-U’s establishment reflects the unwavering commitment of participating nations to the long-term security, sovereignty, and stability of Ukraine. Lieutenant General Bateman expressed his honour in working alongside the new French Deputy Commander, reinforcing the leadership shared by the UK and France within this critical Multinational Force, which has been declared ‘Ready to Operate’ following the recent Coalition of the Willing summit.

The handover marks a planned rotation between the UK and France, emphasising the joint leadership of the MNF-U. The dual objectives of the MNF-U are to regenerate and reassure. The force aims to strengthen Ukraine’s Armed Forces through training and the replenishment of equipment, thereby positioning troops to effectively deter further Russian aggression.

Ensuring a Durable Peace

MNF-U operations, including patrols in Ukrainian skies and seas, will provide the necessary assurance for the country to restore commercial air travel, rebuild its economy, and attract international investment. As barbaric Russian missile and drone attacks persist, the Coalition of the Willing remains dedicated to ensuring that any future peace is durable, credible, and supported by effective security arrangements.

The MNF-U will build upon the outcomes of the recent Coalition of the Willing leaders’ meeting, further solidifying the resolve of Ukraine’s partners to achieve a lasting peace that secures Ukraine’s future as part of the European community.
