As the summer recess draws to a close, children are returning to school, refocusing their energies on education. However, this increased time in the classroom often translates into more time spent in front of screens.

With youngsters already engaged with screens extensively outside of school, the resurgence of digital devices in educational settings could exacerbate the strain on their eyes. To address the escalating issue of myopia, we consulted an ophthalmology expert to discuss effective strategies for safeguarding children’s vision.

The Alarming Rise of Myopia in Children

Short-sightedness, or myopia, is becoming an increasingly prevalent concern, with current rates among children in the UK now approximately twice what they were in the 1960s. Projections indicate that by 2050, around half of the global population may be affected by this visual impairment.

Mr Alex Day, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, highlights the urgency of this issue. He notes, “The digital age has transformed the way our children learn and play. However, we are witnessing a significant rise in myopia, with children becoming short-sighted at increasingly younger ages.”

Myopia occurs when the eye focuses light inappropriately, causing distant objects to appear blurry. Instead of directing focus onto the retina—the light-sensitive layer that transmits visual information to the brain—the light is misaligned, focusing slightly in front of it. This condition typically develops during childhood or adolescence and often has a genetic component. A common indicator of myopia is the ability to see objects up close clearly while struggling with distant vision.

Mr Day warns, “A myopic eye is one that has grown excessively long. The greater the prescription, the higher the risk of developing serious sight-threatening conditions later in life.” He stresses that preventing even a single dioptre of myopia progression in childhood significantly reduces the likelihood of severe eye diseases in adulthood.

Proactive Measures for Parents

If you are a parent concerned about the impact of extended screen time on your child’s eyesight, several proactive measures can be taken to manage myopia effectively. Early intervention could slow its progression by approximately one-third to one-half or more, according to Mr Day.

Among the recommended treatments are low-dose atropine eye drops, specialised myopia-control glasses, contact lenses, and overnight lenses that gently reshape the cornea, known as orthokeratology. Additionally, Mr Day suggests several practical steps to help preserve children’s vision:

  • Encourage outdoor play for at least two hours each day in natural daylight, as this is the most effective method to delay or prevent the onset of myopia.
  • Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, prompt your child to look at something 20 feet away for a minimum of 20 seconds. It is advisable to maintain a distance of at least 30 centimetres from books and screens while reading.
  • Limit recreational screen time to below two hours daily, in accordance with international guidelines, with a recommendation for even less time for school-aged children. It is also wise to keep screens out of bedrooms at night.
  • Utilise free NHS sight tests for children, scheduling their first comprehensive examination around the age of four to five years, coinciding with their schooling. Be vigilant for signs such as squinting, sitting too close to the television, or difficulty seeing the board at school.
  • If your child is already myopic, consult with an optometrist or ophthalmologist regarding treatments that can help slow the progression, rather than merely updating their prescription each year.

Understanding the Link Between Screen Time and Myopia

As Mr Day concludes, “The increasing incidence of myopia in children, particularly at younger ages, necessitates that we promote outdoor activities such as sports, reduce screen time, and maintain a proactive approach to vision assessments. If your child is already myopic, explore treatment options that could mitigate further progression.”

Research indicates that prolonged periods spent focused on screens at close range may elevate the risk of developing myopia. Continuous close-up viewing can strain the eyes and may contribute to the elongation of the eyeball, a known factor in myopia development.

One study observed a marked increase in short-sightedness rates among children who were confined to home schooling during the pandemic, with findings revealing that myopia in six-year-olds surged to approximately three times the rates recorded in previous years.

As children return to their educational routines, it is vital for parents to remain vigilant about their children’s eye health and to encourage habits that promote better vision now and in the future.
