26-Year-Old Arrested in Connection with Former MP Ann Widdecombe’s Death in Devon

A 26-year-old man has been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of former MP Ann Widdecombe, following an extensive manhunt for a white male suspect. The murder inquiry was instigated by Devon and Cornwall Police after Ms Widdecombe was found deceased at her residence in Haytor, Dartmoor, close to Newton Abbot in Devon, at approximately 11:40 am on Thursday, 9th July.

During a press conference later that day, Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman confirmed that the investigation is not being regarded as related to terrorism. The arrested individual is a British national. Ms Widdecombe, who had appeared on Talk Radio the day before, was discovered to have suffered “serious injuries.” Police had been searching for a white male believed to be connected to her death.

At the press briefing, Assistant Chief Constable Longman stated: “A 26-year-old man was arrested in Newton Abbot this afternoon on suspicion of the murder of Ann Widdecombe. “Detectives from the force’s major crime investigation team have launched a murder investigation and are conducting extensive inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Ms Widdecombe’s death,” Longman added. “A cordon remains in place at the property, with specialist officers conducting forensic examinations.
