Rheinmetall UK has officially commenced production at its gun hall in Telford, marking a significant step towards enhancing the capabilities of the British Armed Forces. This development brings large-calibre weapon manufacturing back to the UK for the first time in two decades, ensuring that the nation is better equipped to defend itself. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy aimed at reindustrialisation and fostering economic growth across the country.
Revitalising Domestic Manufacturing
The new gun hall is expected to support approximately 100 highly skilled jobs, focusing on the production of barrels and breeches for various weapon systems, including the 120mm and 155mm calibres used in platforms like the RCH 155 and future artillery systems. As production ramps up, Rheinmetall UK plans to expand its workforce and forge long-term partnerships with British small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), thereby fortifying the domestic supply chain for the years ahead.
Local expertise has been harnessed for this project, with specialist workers from Telford’s engineering sector recruited and trained to undertake high-value manufacturing tasks. This strategic move not only supports the economic growth of the region but also revitalises the local landscape by creating sustainable employment opportunities.
A New Era in Defence
The gun hall’s inauguration is a noteworthy milestone in the UK’s defence landscape. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, alongside Chief of the General Staff General Sir Roly Walker and Rheinmetall AG CEO Armin Papperger, officiated the opening. Rheinmetall UK has transformed what was once an empty site into a fully operational production facility in a mere eight months since taking over in Autumn 2025.
Wes Streeting commented on this rapid transformation, stating, “Britain is back in the business of making the weapons that our Armed Forces need to defend the nation against our adversaries. From an empty site to full production in eight months, this is rapid reindustrialisation in action.” He emphasised the significance of creating skilled jobs in world-class manufacturing and the importance of re-establishing large-calibre weapon production on UK soil.
Building Skills and Expertise
A vital element of the gun hall’s establishment has been the training of British workers, who spent time at Rheinmetall’s production facility in Unterlüß, Germany. This initiative allowed UK employees to acquire essential skills in precision manufacturing, quality assurance, and specialist weapon production, equipping them to spearhead this new sovereign capability upon their return to Telford.
Armin Papperger remarked on the event, stating, “Today’s opening is an important milestone for Rheinmetall and for the United Kingdom. In a remarkably short period of time, we have turned our commitment into a sovereign manufacturing capability that will strengthen Britain’s defence industrial base for decades to come.” He highlighted the longstanding partnership between Rheinmetall and the UK, reaffirming the company’s dedication to investing in the nation and expanding its industrial presence.
Strengthening International Partnerships
The establishment of the gun hall also exemplifies the UK-Germany industrial partnership under the Trinity House Agreement, signed in October 2024. This agreement aims to bolster bilateral cooperation between the two nations, enhancing NATO’s collective deterrence capabilities.
This milestone is part of Rheinmetall UK’s broader investment strategy throughout the UK, which includes contributions to the Boxer vehicle and Challenger 3 battle tank programmes. These initiatives illustrate how defence can play a pivotal role in ensuring national security while simultaneously promoting economic prosperity and strengthening the UK’s industrial base in anticipation of future challenges.
The UK government has pledged £298 billion over the next four years as part of its Defence Investment Plan, reinforcing its commitment to leverage defence spending as a catalyst for economic growth across the nation and create well-paid, long-term employment opportunities.
