Unveiling the First Green Star: WD J1330+6435
When we gaze at the night sky, we often ponder, is there a green star shining bright? Beyond our Sun, all other stars lie so far from Earth that they merely present as points of light. Predominantly white, stars can also exhibit shades of red or blue, with their colour typically correlating to their temperature—blue stars are generally hotter than their red counterparts. But what of other hues?
The illustration featured today presents WD J1330+6435, a white dwarf star encircled by an accretion disk composed of gas and rocky debris. White dwarfs are the remnants of stars similar to our Sun, having depleted their nuclear fuel. Recent discoveries have revealed that certain white dwarf stars, despite their designation, can appear in various shades including yellow, green, cyan, pink, or even purple. In these instances, trace elements that accumulate on these stars interact with their stellar atmospheres, resulting in a shift from their typical white appearance. Unfortunately, these fascinating colours remain too faint for our eyes to perceive this evening.
What Awaits Tomorrow: An Eye in the Sky
