Increased Interest from Foreign Companies in Acquiring British Businesses

Increased Interest from Foreign Companies in Acquiring British Businesses

British enterprises are set to benefit from enhanced opportunities for international trade, potentially leading to increased employment and economic growth within local communities, following the recent announcement by the Chancellor.

Introducing Flexible Finance for Export Growth

A new initiative from UK Export Finance (UKEF), termed Flexible Finance, aims to assist selected buyers operating in rapidly developing markets such as Brazil, Morocco, and Mexico. This pilot product is designed to facilitate greater British exports by providing these buyers with access to loans on more adaptable terms, thereby incentivising them to procure British goods.

In contrast to UKEF’s existing financial guarantees, the Flexible Finance initiative offers borrowers increased latitude in utilising the funds. It encourages international buyers to collaborate with UK firms by leveraging UKEF support and opting for British suppliers. Furthermore, UKEF will actively engage with UK businesses, providing matchmaking and procurement assistance to foster these connections.

Under this pilot scheme, UKEF guarantees amounting to a total of £5 billion will be available, covering up to 80% of a commercial loan for selected overseas buyers. This approach not only broadens financial access for foreign borrowers but also establishes a partnership with UKEF to enhance their imports of British goods and services.

Government Commitment to Supporting British Industry

This initiative aligns with the Chancellor’s commitment to ‘Backing Britain’, particularly through procurement and job creation, which he has identified as a key governmental priority. The aim is to stimulate growth across all regions and restore optimism within communities.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey MP, remarked, “We are supporting British businesses to secure more international deals, particularly in fast-growing countries where our presence is limited. This innovative approach is part of my forthcoming speech in Liverpool, where I will emphasise our commitment to British industry and innovation, thereby creating new markets abroad and generating more jobs domestically.”

Building a Foundation for Future Exports

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, expressed confidence in Britain’s capacity to engage with global markets, highlighting the importance of embracing new opportunities. He stated, “Through Flexible Finance, we are not only signalling to foreign nations that they should consider buying British, but we are also laying a robust foundation for sustainable growth and job creation in the UK, as British companies reap the rewards of a flourishing export market.”

This initiative is the latest enhancement to UKEF’s offerings, demonstrating its adaptability in response to the Industrial Strategy. It follows the introduction of a new defence export facility in June, which has expanded UKEF’s support for defence exports by an impressive £50 billion.
