UK Issues Statement to OSCE Following Ratko Mladić’s Funeral

Ratko Mladić, as a military commander, oversaw some of the most appalling crimes witnessed in Europe since the conclusion of the Second World War. He was found guilty by an independent United Nations tribunal of heinous acts including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The denial and minimisation of his actions not only represent a grave violation of international law but also pose a significant threat to regional stability and trust. The glorification of a convicted war criminal only serves to deepen divisions and stands in stark opposition to the principles of reconciliation.

Accountability and International Obligations

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established by the UN Security Council, and it is imperative that Serbia adheres to its rulings. Moreover, as a signatory of the Dayton Peace Agreement, Serbia carries the responsibility to endorse accountability for serious breaches of international law while actively contributing to peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the broader region.

The United Kingdom maintains a firm stance that there is no place for genocide denial or the glorification of war criminals. Our commitment to international justice, accountability, and the respect for the rulings of international courts remains unwavering. The UK Government stands in solidarity with the victims of Mladić and their families, who deserve compassion, respect, and accountability, rather than attempts to distort established historical facts. It is the duty of political leaders and public institutions to focus on future possibilities rather than past grievances, acting in ways that foster reconciliation.

Importance of Judicial Independence

At a particularly sensitive juncture for the Western Balkans, it is essential that all governments and political figures uphold the independence of judicial processes, acknowledge established truths, and refrain from engaging in denial or revisionism regarding atrocities. The integrity of historical record is crucial for fostering a shared future.
