FCDO Calls in Iranian Chargé d’Affaires Following Assault on International Journalist in Iran

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) announced today that, following directives from the Foreign Secretary, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Iranian Embassy in London has been summoned for discussions. Mr Ali Nasimfar was called in by Hamish Falconer, the Minister for the Middle East.

This meeting comes in the wake of the sentencing of two Romanian individuals implicated in the attack on Iranian journalist Pouria Zeraati, which took place in March 2024. The presiding judge determined that the assault was executed in the interests of the Iranian state, highlighting a disturbing trend of aggressive operations by Iranian intelligence services within the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the judge established that one of the defendants, George Stana, met the criteria under the National Security Act 2023, indicating that he was aware, or should have been aware, of the connection to Iran concerning the attack.

Concerns Over Iranian Activities

The UK government remains vigilant regarding threats emanating from Iran and those acting on its behalf. Such actions are seen as an infringement on UK sovereignty and security, and the government has deemed them completely intolerable. A strong message has been conveyed: Iran must halt these activities without delay.
