Alan Lovell Takes the Helm as New Chair of British Steel

The Business Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, has announced the appointment of Alan Lovell as the new Chair of British Steel. This significant appointment is intended to guide the company through a transformative period, ensuring its stability and aligning with its long-term strategic objectives.

Alan Lovell’s Extensive Experience

Alan Lovell brings a wealth of experience to this role, having held various executive and non-executive leadership positions across sectors such as infrastructure, construction, energy, and financial services. His career has been marked by his ability to lead the turnaround and transformation of numerous organisations, making him well-suited to steer British Steel in its next phase.

During his executive tenure, Alan has served as Chief Executive Officer for six different companies, including Infinis, Tamar Energy, and Costain Group plc. Additionally, he has occupied several senior non-executive roles, such as Chair of Interserve Group, and has contributed to organisations like Lloyd’s of London, SIG, and the Consumer Council for Water.

Currently, Alan holds the position of Chair of the Environment Agency, a role he has undertaken since September 2022. He is set to step down from this position at the end of December 2026, after an extended term.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds expressed his confidence in Alan, stating, “Alan brings a wealth of experience to British Steel at a crucial time for the business. He understands what it takes to lead companies through major change, and I know he will work closely with the workforce, the Board, and local communities as British Steel enters its next chapter.”

Reynolds further emphasised that the government’s intervention to secure British Steel’s future was not solely about saving one company; it was about supporting the industries, skills, and communities that are vital for the reindustrialisation of Britain. He expressed his satisfaction that Alan has accepted this pivotal role and looks forward to collaborating with him to ensure a robust future for steelmaking in the UK.

Alan Lovell’s Vision for British Steel

In response to his appointment, Alan Lovell remarked, “I am proud to have been appointed into this role at such a pivotal time for the company. The world-class steel we produce is vital to Britain’s defence, infrastructure, and buildings, and is a cornerstone of the UK economy. Together with my fellow board members, I am looking to the future with great optimism.”

Alan Lovell is set to officially assume his role as Chair on Monday, 14 September 2026.
