Heidi Alexander, the Secretary of State for Transport, has announced the appointment of two new non-executive board members to the Department for Transport (DfT) board on 9 September 2026. Charles Randell CBE has been designated as the Lead Non-Executive Board Member, while Harjit Sandhu will serve as a Non-Executive Board Member and Chair of the Group Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee (ARAC).
Non-executive board members are distinguished professionals from outside the government who offer independent insights, support, and constructive challenges to ministers and senior officials. Their contributions are vital in enhancing the governance and overall performance of government departments.
New Leadership Appointments Announced
Charles Randell CBE will take on the role of Lead Non-Executive Board Member for a term of three years, beginning in October 2026. His selection followed a rigorous and transparent process that adhered to the governance code on public appointments as stipulated by the Cabinet Office.
Harjit Sandhu’s appointment as Non-Executive Board Member and Chair of the Group Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee also spans three years, commencing on 1 September 2026. Sandhu’s appointment was facilitated by section 7.10 of the governance code on public appointments, which permits the appointment of candidates who have previously been deemed suitable through other public appointment assessments.

All public appointments are made based on merit through a fair and transparent process, barring any exceptions as allowed by the governance code. It is important to note that political affiliations do not influence the selection process. In line with the governance code, any political activity that has been declared is made public. Both Charles Randell CBE and Harjit Sandhu have confirmed that they have not engaged in any political activities.
