UK Government Declares Israeli Occupation Unlawful

The United Kingdom has officially determined that Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories is unlawful, a stance that aligns with a significant advisory ruling from the International Court of Justice. This assertion comes amidst growing concerns over escalating settler violence, the rapid expansion of settlements, and the lack of accountability for those perpetrating violence. Such developments pose a serious threat to the prospects for lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the UK government has unveiled a series of robust measures aimed at safeguarding the two-state solution, which remains a cornerstone of its policy regarding Israel and Palestine. The new initiatives include a ban on the importation of goods from illegal Israeli settlements and the introduction of powers to sanction individuals and companies involved in supporting or profiting from these settlements. Furthermore, advertising or promoting properties located in such settlements will be prohibited.

Joint Action with International Partners

The announcement is part of a concerted effort alongside France and Canada to restrict trade with illegal settlements and follows similar actions by other European nations such as Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Norway. Many of these countries have already instituted measures to limit trade associated with illegal settlements, reflecting a growing international consensus on the issue.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, during his address in Parliament, emphasised the UK’s independent assessment of the situation, stating that Israel’s occupation is deemed unlawful. He highlighted the rapid expansion of illegal settlements as a significant barrier to achieving a two-state solution. Notably, the United Nations reported that last year, 16 Palestinians lost their lives at the hands of settlers, alongside over 1,400 documented incidents of settler-related violence—an alarming average of more than six incidents per day.

Commitment to Human Rights and Security

The UK government’s recent measures are not aimed at the Israeli populace but rather at the actions of its government, which threaten the viability of peace. “In an increasingly volatile world, Britain must be willing to lead,” stated Prime Minister Andy Burnham, reinforcing the government’s commitment to upholding values of dignity, security, and peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Burnham further remarked on the dire humanitarian situation faced by Palestinians, especially in Gaza, where many continue to suffer from a lack of adequate resources such as food, water, and medical supplies. In light of this, the UK has committed substantial humanitarian support, reaching over 1.4 million individuals with food assistance and improving water, sanitation, and hygiene services for more than 830,000 people across Palestine.

New Sanctions Against Extremist Activities

In conjunction with measures targeting illegal settlements, the UK government is also imposing sanctions on five individuals involved in inciting violence against Palestinians, bringing the total number of sanctioned individuals to 38. This effort is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the UK’s response to serious human rights violations, enhancing the existing global human rights sanctions regime to encompass violations linked to illegal settlement activities.

The government has also announced new powers to address Iran’s nuclear programme, including sanctions that specifically target key sectors such as finance, trade, and energy. These measures are designed to deter destabilising activities in the region while maintaining a commitment to protect legitimate trade relationships with Israel.

The UK remains resolute in its support for a two-state solution, a long-held objective of successive British governments. This commitment is grounded in the belief that the only path to enduring security for both Israelis and Palestinians is through peaceful coexistence. The government will continue to engage with both Israeli and Palestinian partners to implement the 20-Point Plan for Peace in Gaza, aiming to restore dignity and security for all involved.
