Adam Pile Appointed as New British High Commissioner to Mozambique

Mr Adam Pile OBE has been appointed as the British High Commissioner to the Republic of Mozambique, succeeding Ms Helen Lewis, who will be moving on to a new role within the Diplomatic Service. Mr Pile is set to assume his new position in January 2027.

Professional Background and Experience

Mr Pile’s extensive career within the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and other governmental departments showcases his dedication and expertise in various diplomatic roles. From 2025 to 2026, he served as the Deputy Director of the Sudan and South Sudan Unit at the FCDO, where he contributed significantly to the UK’s diplomatic efforts in the region.

Prior to this role, Mr Pile held the position of Deputy and Acting Director of the Overseas Territories and Polar Directorate from 2019 to 2025. His responsibilities included serving as the Acting Governor of the Falkland Islands and the Acting Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands during the summer of 2024. This experience highlights his capability in managing complex geopolitical situations.

Significant Roles in Government

Mr Pile’s career began at the Cabinet Office, where he worked as Deputy Director from 2015 to 2018, and previously as part of the Cabinet Secretariat from 2012 to 2015. His involvement in constitutional and parliamentary reform was marked during his tenure from 2009 to 2012 as Head of the Constitution and Parliamentary Reform Team, a role that further solidified his understanding of governance and legislative processes.

His earlier experience includes positions at the Scotland Office from 2006 to 2009 and the Home Office, where he focused on asylum and police reform from 2004 to 2006. Each role has contributed to his comprehensive understanding of the UK’s domestic and international policy landscape.
