British High Commission in Honiara Celebrates Team Solomons’ Return from the Commonwealth Games

On Wednesday, 26 August, the British High Commissioner, His Excellency Paul Turner, graciously hosted athletes and officials from Team Solomons for an afternoon tea to celebrate their participation in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, last month.

The Solomon Islands team proudly represented their nation at the 11th Commonwealth Games, which took place from 23 July to 2 August. The delegation comprised 13 athletes, both men and women, competing in various disciplines including athletics, boxing, judo, swimming, and weightlifting/para powerlifting.

Leading the team as flag bearer was Maximilian Makana, while para powerlifter Moffet Tolomae had the honour of carrying the Commonwealth Sport Baton. Although Team Solomons did not secure any medals this time, they achieved significant milestones, including personal bests in swimming and middle- and long-distance running. The experience gained from competing against some of the world’s elite athletes was invaluable.

Celebrating Athletic Achievements

During his address to the athletes at the British High Commission, H.E. Paul Turner praised the team’s spirit and the personal bests that many competitors accomplished in Glasgow. He paid special homage to veteran weightlifter Jenly Tegu Wini, who has participated in five consecutive Commonwealth Games, and para powerlifter Moffet Tolomae, whose involvement in the Glasgow Games represents a pivotal moment in the development of para-sport within the Solomon Islands.

Reflecting on the triumph of the Solomon Islands women’s football team from the previous year, H.E. Turner underscored the important role that athletes play in inspiring the younger generation. He stated, “Beyond medals, sports serve as a means for youth empowerment and national unity.”

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

Team Manager Simon Chottu expressed his gratitude for the British High Commission’s support of sports in the Solomon Islands. He noted that the team is now focused on achieving further success at the Pacific Games scheduled to take place in Tahiti in July 2027. Chottu emphasised that Team Solomon returned home filled with pride, having represented their nation with commitment and perseverance, thereby establishing a solid foundation for future Commonwealth Games and international competitions.
