When people first consider psychotherapy, they are rarely searching for advice alone. More often, they are looking for understanding of emotions that feel overwhelming, relationships that seem to repeat painful patterns, or experiences that continue to shape their lives long after they have passed.
For Michele Lamonaca, psychotherapy begins with that search for understanding.
A UKCP accredited psychotherapist, psychosexual therapist and clinical supervisor, Michele has been working in private practice since 2012, supporting individuals, couples and professionals from his London practice while also providing online psychotherapy internationally. Alongside clients throughout the United Kingdom, he regularly works with people living across Europe, the United States, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Bali and many other parts of the world. His international practice enables him to support expatriates, professionals working overseas, international students and individuals seeking continuity of psychological care regardless of where they live.
His work is founded on a simple belief: every person’s story is unique. Rather than applying a single model to every client, he develops an individual psychological formulation that reflects each person’s history, relationships, emotional world and current circumstances. Therapy therefore becomes a collaborative process of discovery, seeking not only to relieve distress but also to understand the deeper emotional processes that give rise to it.
A Philosophy Rooted in Understanding
Modern life often encourages quick solutions. Michele believes that while symptom relief is important, lasting psychological change usually begins with understanding. Anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties and low self-esteem rarely develop in isolation; they are often rooted in attachment experiences, trauma, loss and longstanding patterns of relating to ourselves and others.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy forms the foundation of his clinical thinking. Rather than asking only, ‘How do we reduce symptoms?’, it also asks, ‘How did these difficulties develop, and what purpose might they once have served?’ Alongside psychodynamic psychotherapy, Michele integrates cognitive behavioural, humanistic, relational and trauma-informed approaches whenever clinically appropriate, ensuring therapy remains flexible while maintaining a coherent psychological framework.

Academic Excellence Supporting Clinical Practice
Michele’s commitment to lifelong learning is reflected in extensive postgraduate education and specialist professional training. His qualifications include a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from The Open University, a Master’s Degree in Psychodynamic Practice from the University of Oxford, a Master’s Degree in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse from Goldsmiths, University of London, a Second-Level Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from University Unicusano, a Second-Level Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychosexology, and a Second-Level Master’s Degree in Treatment of Sexual Offenders, Abusers and Victims of Abuse from University Unicusano.
He has also completed an Advanced Diploma in Couple Therapy from NAOS Institute, a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Clinical Supervision from University of Derby, and specialist professional training through StopSO (Specialist Treatment Organisation for the Prevention of Sexual Offending).
Michele is accredited by the UKCP and NCPS, registered with the BACP and the British Psychological Society (MBPsS), practising in accordance with their ethical frameworks and professional standards.
Working Across the Complexity of Human Experience
Throughout his career Michele has supported clients experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, low confidence, relationship difficulties, trauma and major life transitions. A significant part of his work involves supporting survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and childhood adversity through compassionate, trauma-informed psychotherapy that respects each individual’s pace of recovery.
He also offers specialist couples therapy, helping partners understand the emotional dynamics that underpin conflict, communication difficulties and intimacy concerns, combining psychodynamic insight with evidence-informed relational approaches.
Drawing upon advanced training in Clinical Psychosexology, Michele works with individuals and couples experiencing sexual and intimacy difficulties, recognising the close relationship between emotional wellbeing, identity, relationships and sexuality.
Alongside this work, he has developed specialist expertise through StopSO and further study, supporting individuals presenting with problematic, unhealthy and illegal sexual behaviour within a structured, ethical and preventative therapeutic framework.
An Inclusive and International Practice
Michele provides affirmative psychotherapy for LGBTQ+ individuals, couples and families, offering a respectful, culturally sensitive and non-judgmental therapeutic environment.
Today his consulting room extends far beyond London. While many clients continue to attend in person, secure online psychotherapy allows him to work with people across Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and beyond. This international perspective enriches his understanding of cultural identity, migration, relocation, expatriate life and the psychological challenges of living between countries.
Clinical Supervision
Alongside psychotherapy, Michele provides clinical supervision for qualified therapists and trainees. Supported by his PGCert in Clinical Supervision, he encourages reflective practice, ethical thinking and ongoing professional development within a collaborative supervisory relationship.
Looking Beyond Immediate Relief
After more than a decade in practice, Michele Lamonaca continues to believe that meaningful psychological change begins with understanding. Whether working with an individual experiencing anxiety, a couple seeking to rebuild their relationship, a survivor of trauma, someone exploring identity or a fellow clinician in supervision, his aim remains the same: to create a therapeutic relationship in which people feel genuinely heard, understood and supported.
Ultimately, psychotherapy is not simply about overcoming symptoms. It is about understanding ourselves more fully, relating to others more authentically and living with greater emotional freedom. That philosophy continues to shape Michele Lamonaca’s work with every client who enters the consulting room, whether in London or connecting online from elsewhere in the world.
