In July 2026, the Prime Minister announced a significant reduction in taxes on electricity bills, providing relief to households across the nation. Starting from 1 October 2026, the Value Added Tax (VAT) on household electricity bills will be abolished, resulting in an average annual saving of £45 for families.
This tax cut is expected to mitigate the increase in Ofgem’s energy price cap, following an earlier reduction of £150 in costs that was implemented earlier in the year. Additionally, approximately 6 million households will qualify for the Warm Home Discount this winter, which offers an extra £150 deduction on electricity bills.
Understanding Your Savings
Claiming these savings is straightforward, as no action is required on your part. Electricity suppliers will calculate the total amount of electricity consumed during a specific period, along with the daily standing charge, and previously applied a 5% VAT to this total. However, with the new measures in place from 1 October 2026, this VAT requirement will be lifted. Consequently, all suppliers are anticipated to refrain from charging VAT on electricity bills, including those on fixed energy tariffs where rates have already been secured.
The precise savings you will experience depend on the electricity pricing set by your supplier and your individual consumption levels.
Impact on Pre-Payment Meters
If you utilise a pre-payment meter, it’s worth noting that VAT has typically been added to the amount loaded onto your key or card. From 1 October 2026, this additional charge will also be removed, allowing for further savings when topping up your meter.
For those on non-domestic tariffs, small businesses, charities, and residential care homes that are currently enjoying the reduced 5% VAT rate on electricity will similarly benefit from the transition to a 0% rate this winter, further easing financial burdens.
The Duration of the VAT Reduction
This VAT reduction has been financed for the financial year 2026 to 2027, following the cancellation of the digital ID programme. The government is committed to continually assessing opportunities to further alleviate financial pressure on families facing high energy bills, ensuring that support measures remain in place as needed.
