Today, under the guidance of NRS, a division of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group, Harwell continues to play a crucial role in facilitating safe, sustainable decommissioning while fostering opportunities for future scientific discovery and economic development.

Since its inception in 1946, Harwell has stood at the forefront of the UK’s scientific journey, evolving from its initial focus on atomic research to becoming a modern centre for decommissioning expertise and technological progress.

In its formative years, Harwell was pivotal in establishing the framework for the UK’s civil nuclear industry. The site was home to some of the nation’s earliest research reactors and laboratories, driving innovations that have influenced national energy policy and scientific capabilities for generations.

The site has also made significant strides in healthcare and industry, pioneering the production of radiopharmaceuticals and isotopes that have underpinned life-saving treatments and various industrial applications internationally.

Leading the Charge in Decommissioning

Presently, NRS Harwell is at the vanguard of safe decommissioning, meticulously dismantling legacy facilities on behalf of the NDA. With decades of specialised expertise, the site effectively addresses some of the UK’s most intricate nuclear challenges while simultaneously creating opportunities for regeneration, innovation, and economic growth.

To date, decommissioning efforts have successfully eliminated more than one million square feet of facility space and cleared 1.6 million square feet of land, enabling 23 hectares to be delicensed and made available for redevelopment. This progress has facilitated the establishment of the internationally esteemed Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, which now supports thousands of jobs and houses hundreds of organisations at the cutting edge of science, technology, and research.

Recently, Harwell’s extraordinary history has been commemorated through a dedicated mini-series by ITV Meridian, showcasing the site’s contributions to science, innovation, and nuclear expertise over the past eight decades. The series offers an insightful glimpse into the individuals, projects, and legacies that have defined Harwell and is accessible through ITV Meridian catch-up and ITV’s YouTube channel.
