Minister Urges Israel to Increase Humanitarian Aid to Gaza During Landmark Regional Visit

The recent visit to Egypt by the UK Minister for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty MP, has highlighted the urgent need for rapid and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza. During this two-day trip, Doughty underscored the importance of Israel facilitating the flow of aid into the besieged territory, which has been severely affected by ongoing conflict.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

This visit not only reaffirmed Egypt’s central role in the humanitarian response to the crisis in Gaza but also showcased the UK’s commitment to working collaboratively with regional partners. Doughty toured the humanitarian support facilities at Al Arish, situated close to the Gaza border, where he witnessed the extensive logistics operations in place, including over £2 million in UK-funded assistance to the Egyptian Red Crescent. This support aims to ensure that life-saving aid reaches those in dire need.

During his visit, Doughty expressed the UK Government’s dedication to increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza. “Our government has been at the forefront of humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza and engaged in diplomatic efforts to facilitate more aid,” he stated. “However, the current aid flows are simply insufficient, and barriers must be removed to allow for effective delivery.”

Addressing the Crisis in Gaza

The Minister’s remarks reflect a growing concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where reports indicate that an average of one child has lost their life daily since the onset of the ceasefire. The UK has pledged over £127 million in support for Palestine during this financial year, demonstrating a commitment to alleviating the suffering experienced by Gazans.

Doughty also engaged in discussions with high-ranking Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty and Deputy Foreign Ministers Mohamed Abu Bakr and Nabil Habashi. These meetings served to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to collaborating with Egypt and other regional partners in efforts to reduce instability and protect UK interests.

New Migration Partnership Established

In a significant development, the Minister signed a new partnership agreement focused on migration between the UK and Egypt. This landmark agreement aims to expedite the return process for Egyptian nationals who do not have the right to remain in the UK, potentially reducing the time required by up to 90%. This initiative follows the recent £9 million increase in UK funding to assist North African countries in managing migration challenges exacerbated by regional conflicts.
