The UK is poised to witness the launch of up to ten new venture capital funds, aimed at broadening access to investment opportunities beyond the capital. This initiative comes as part of the British Business Bank’s Investor Pathways Capital Initiative, which has recently received a significant boost of £100 million from the Chancellor. The scheme is designed to provide early-stage companies across the nation with the financial backing they need to thrive and expand.
Promoting Regional Growth through Investment
During a recent visit to Sheffield and Leeds, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury engaged with local businesses, lenders, and investors to discuss strategies for fostering regional growth. The initiative aims to support talented first-time venture capital fund managers from diverse backgrounds, ultimately facilitating £400 million in total investment. This investment is crucial for helping businesses scale up, driving local economic growth and generating additional employment opportunities across the UK.
Many businesses, regardless of size, have been feeling the pressure of rising operational costs. In response, the Chancellor is championing investment outside London to mitigate these challenges and enhance the financial landscape for businesses throughout the country. Chancellor John Healey MP emphasised the importance of wealth creation, stating that the goal is to cultivate an economy that benefits everyone.
Encouraging Investment in Local Economies
Healey noted, “One of my priorities as Chancellor is wealth creation. That means building an economy that helps people live well. I know there is a cost of business and it will not go unnoticed.” He further articulated that increasing support for businesses that invest in people is essential, and the £100 million boost is intended to revitalise local economies nationwide.
In June, the British Business Bank allocated up to £90 million to ten new microfunds as part of an initial phase of the Investor Pathways Capital Initiative. Applications for the subsequent cohort, which forms part of the latest £100 million deployment, are set to open in Autumn 2026.
Empowering Businesses Across the UK
Lucy Rigby, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, reinforced the commitment to growth in every postcode, declaring that businesses are fundamental to this goal. She highlighted the importance of unlocking investment and facilitating access to capital for British enterprises, ensuring that firms receive the necessary financial support to grow, innovate, and create jobs.
Rigby’s discussions in Yorkshire focused on how the government can bolster the British Business Bank and industry collaboration, enabling ambitious British firms to secure the financing essential for their growth and job creation efforts. These meetings are part of a broader strategy to enhance the UK’s business finance ecosystem, ensuring that growth benefits all regions of the country.
Strengthening Business Finance Ecosystem
The government is making strides to fulfil commitments made at Mansion House, with recent reforms to the Growth Guarantee Scheme expected to increase lending capacity by a further £2 billion annually by 2028/29. This enhancement aims to assist an additional 12,000 smaller businesses in accessing finance each year, while also extending loan terms and broadening eligibility criteria. Such measures are designed to facilitate greater access to funding, enabling firms to invest, expand, and create jobs.
The British Business Bank plays a pivotal role in realising this vision, offering support to businesses throughout their growth journey via debt finance, venture capital, and targeted investment programmes. Recent initiatives have included investments aimed at fostering innovative technology firms, establishing new venture capital funds, and supporting underserved communities across the UK’s diverse regions.
