Significant Broadband Upgrade Set to Transform Connectivity for 60,000 Rural Homes and Businesses in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Over 60,000 homes and businesses across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire can now enjoy enhanced broadband connectivity through the UK Government’s Project Gigabit initiative. Communities surrounding Barnsley, Huddersfield, Hull, Bradford, York, Boston, and Wisbech are among the latest beneficiaries of this significant upgrade.

Project Gigabit aims to provide digital solutions to rural areas in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, enabling local communities to flourish through improved connectivity. This initiative is instrumental in helping residents develop businesses, acquire new skills, and enhance their overall quality of life.

Enhanced Connectivity for Rural Communities

Thanks to this initiative, thousands of individuals in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire can now stream content, work remotely, study online, and maintain connections with friends and family without the frustrations that often accompany poor internet service. The upgrade will allow more families in rural locales to make uninterrupted video calls, students to engage in online learning, and local businesses to process payments and reach customers effectively.

Locations such as Winterton in North Lincolnshire, Fosdyke in Lincolnshire, and Sessay and Linton on Ouse in Yorkshire have recently joined the growing list of areas experiencing the benefits of faster broadband. This rollout is ongoing, with more villages, hamlets, and rural residences being connected each week.

Broader Opportunities Beyond Broadband

The initiative is not only about providing faster internet access; it also fosters additional opportunities. Quickline, a key player in this rollout, has facilitated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) workshops for over 1,700 young people in East Yorkshire, engaging 80 pupils from Skirlaugh Primary School in practical activities that illustrate the relevance of engineering and telecommunications.

Moreover, more than 130 individuals from Yorkshire and Lincolnshire have gained invaluable hands-on experience through Quickline’s apprenticeship programme, a direct outcome of the £127 million funding allocated to the firm via Project Gigabit.

Ian Murray, the Minister of State at the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport, remarked, “Good broadband is essential in equipping families, workers, and local businesses with the tools they need for progress, irrespective of their location. This milestone demonstrates that Project Gigabit has successfully integrated better digital opportunities into local communities across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, which have long suffered from unreliable connections.”

Transformative Experiences for Local Residents

A family of five from North Lincolnshire, including two avid gamers, shared that their switch from a sluggish copper connection to Quickline’s full-fibre broadband has revolutionised their internet experience, enabling them to stream, game, and work from home simultaneously without any slowdowns. Similarly, East Yorkshire resident Margaret expressed her gratitude for the reliable service provided by Quickline, which has significantly improved her ability to stay connected with her friends and family.

Project Gigabit is dedicated to delivering high-speed broadband to underserved communities throughout the UK. To date, the programme has upgraded more than 1.3 million premises, focusing primarily on rural areas where gigabit coverage remains limited.

Broadband Access Across the UK

According to the latest updates, 88% of premises across the UK now have access to gigabit-capable broadband, a notable increase from just 6% in early 2019. Building Digital UK has reported that gigabit-capable broadband has been delivered to over 1.4 million premises, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving digital access.

The most recent communities to benefit from this rollout include:

• Lincolnshire: Sutton St James, Tydd St Giles, villages to the west of Boston, Burgh le Marsh, and many villages between Skegness and Coningsby.
• East Riding / East Yorkshire: Newport & Gilberdyke, areas around Beverley & Market Weighton, such as Holme On Spalding Moore & Middleton-On-The-Wolds.
• West Yorkshire: Villages around Hebden Bridge, including Cragg Vale, and areas around Holmfirth, west of Bradford.
• North Yorkshire: Middleton Tyas near Scotch Corner, Fylingthorpe near Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors, Hawes & Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales, and Marton Cum Grafton, Bishopthorpe near York.
