New British High Commissioner to Brunei: Welcoming Mel Barlow

Melanie Barlow has been appointed as the British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, with her new role set to commence in September 2026. This appointment marks a significant step in her distinguished diplomatic career, which spans various high-profile positions across the globe.

A Distinguished Career in Diplomacy

Ms Barlow currently serves as His Majesty’s Ambassador in Vientiane, a position she has held since 2023. Prior to this, she was the Deputy Ambassador and Consul General in Kathmandu from 2022 to 2023, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Her career with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) includes serving as the Deputy Head of the Consular Strategy and Network Department from 2019 to 2022. During this time, she was instrumental in shaping the UK’s consular policies and strategies.

Key Roles and Contributions

Ms Barlow’s expertise in trade negotiation is evident from her tenure as the Lead Trade Negotiator within the Third Country Agreements Unit in 2018-2019. This role allowed her to engage with international partners on trade matters, enhancing the UK’s economic interests abroad.

Before entering the trade realm, she held a senior managerial position in the Illegal Wildlife Trade Joint Unit in 2018, focusing on private sector engagement, which reflects her commitment to addressing significant global challenges.

International Experience and Language Skills

Her extensive international experience includes serving as the Trade Policy and Economic Diplomacy Counsellor in Seoul from 2015 to 2018, as well as leading teams focused on South Asian countries, including India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. These roles have equipped her with a deep understanding of complex regional dynamics.

Ms Barlow’s early career included diplomatic postings in Tokyo, where she served in both political and trade capacities, further enhancing her skills and knowledge. Her language training in Japanese in 2004-2005 also speaks to her dedication to cultural and linguistic proficiency, which is crucial in diplomacy.
