Local Campaigners Celebrate Victory as Bridge Linking Two West London Tube Stations Set for Repainting

A bridge linking two Tube stations in West London is set for a repainting in early August, following extensive advocacy from local residents. The crossing that connects Shepherd’s Bush Market with Goldhawk Road will receive general maintenance courtesy of Transport for London (TfL), after which a new mural artwork will be introduced, funded by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

A temporary sign placed on Uxbridge Road indicates that a lane will be closed from August 3 to 7, between the hours of 6am and 7pm, as the bridge is revitalised with a fresh coat of paint. One local resident expressed their enthusiasm for the development, adding that they are “eagerly waiting” for further information regarding enhancements to Shepherd’s Bush Market station and its platforms.

Community Efforts Drive Change

This announcement follows a dedicated local campaign and a recent intervention by James Small-Edwards, the London Assembly Member for West Central. Mr Small-Edwards remarked on his persistent efforts to urge TfL to improve the conditions at Shepherd’s Bush Market station, yet progress had been slow. Although TfL had pledged to repaint the crossing by the end of March, the deadline elapsed with minimal visible action.

The group Fix Uxbridge Road (FUR), formed in response to a petition in 2025 that called on Hammersmith and Fulham Council to enhance the area, has also been advocating for improvements from both TfL and the local authority. The emergence of the sign announcing the imminent painting of the crossing has been positively received by both residents and local businesses.

Angela, a local resident who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed her delight at the news: “I am thrilled to learn that the bridge is finally going to be painted. It has been an eyesore marked by graffiti for far too long, and although the graffiti was cleaned up a few months ago, the bridge hasn’t been painted in at least 30 years.” She added, “It was wonderful for residents to partake in selecting the colours for the bridge, which FUR recently conducted a poll on via social media.”

Positive Local Impact Anticipated

In addition to the bridge itself, Angela noted that the brickwork would be cleaned and essential maintenance work would be undertaken. “We are also eagerly awaiting news on further improvements to the station and platforms. We certainly hope this will mark the beginning of numerous enhancements to the station and Uxbridge Road as a whole, and we thank the council and TfL for facilitating this change.”

Another resident, Robbin Pierce, pointed out that some prospective buyers remain cautious about moving to Shepherd’s Bush due to the unappealing state of Uxbridge Road. “This bridge painting is a small yet significant indicator of progress—visible proof that positive change is on the horizon,” he stated.

Malik Zameer Awan, Store Manager at a nearby Nisa, remarked, “A clean, freshly painted bridge enhances the area’s attractiveness, encouraging more visitors to spend time here. It will likely boost foot traffic as Shepherd’s Bush is a well-known tourist destination, thanks to the Westfield shopping centre, O2 Empire, historic Shepherd’s Bush Market, and Loftus Road Stadium, home of QPR.”

Local Businesses Optimistic About Future

Awan further explained, “A well-maintained environment can attract more visitors, benefiting cafés, convenience stores, restaurants, and other local shops. Eradicating graffiti, especially if it is extensive or offensive, can create a sense of safety and care within the area, inspiring greater confidence in local businesses as regeneration efforts continue.” He added that local residents may be more inclined to support nearby businesses when the neighbourhood appears cleaner and more inviting. “Congratulations to everyone involved in this campaign,” he concluded.

Paul Jorgensen, Co-Founder and Director of the local estate agency Jorgensen Turner, noted, “The repainting of the bridge at Shepherd’s Bush Market station is a highly positive step towards regenerating the local environment along Uxbridge Road, as it serves as a prominent landmark for the area.”

It is expected that Tube services will remain unaffected during the maintenance work. Councillor Zarar Qayyum, Hammersmith and Fulham’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Skills, commented, “Shepherd’s Bush Market Tube station acts as a gateway to Uxbridge Road, which is home to the historic Shepherd’s Bush Market and cultural venues such as Bush Hall and Bush Theatre, among others. We aim to create a pleasant atmosphere for both residents and visitors, which is why we have collaborated with the community to repaint the bridge. We hope that TfL will now expedite urgent improvements to the station, which has fallen into disrepair.”
