Funding from Sellafield Supports Vital Air Ambulance Operations in West Cumbria

Sellafield Ltd has pledged a substantial £195,990 through its Social Impact, Multiplied (SiX) programme to bolster the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). This funding will facilitate 30 advanced critical care missions across West Cumbria, encompassing the deployment of expert clinical teams, specialist equipment, necessary medications, and helicopter operations.

This investment is crucial for GNAAS’s ongoing efforts to provide emergency care to some of the region’s most critically ill and injured patients, ensuring they receive rapid and life-saving treatment. The highly trained doctors and paramedics of GNAAS administer advanced care directly at the scene, which may involve administering anaesthetics, blood transfusions, and other vital treatments prior to patient transfer to hospitals.

During the previous year, GNAAS responded to 129 emergencies in West Cumbria, with many cases necessitating urgent specialist attention. The significance of this service resonates deeply within local communities, including those connected to Sellafield.

A Personal Account of Life-Saving Care

David Pennington, a Sellafield Ltd employee hailing from Whitehaven, is one individual who owes his life to this essential service. An avid runner, David had just completed long-distance runs mere days before a life-altering incident occurred at work when he unexpectedly collapsed.

Reflecting on that day, David stated, “I can’t remember anything from that day apart from showing my pass at the gate. It was mind-boggling to go from running miles to having a cardiac arrest and waking up days later not knowing what had happened.”

His colleagues and on-site emergency responders acted swiftly, performing CPR and utilising a defibrillator to revive him before the arrival of the air ambulance. The GNAAS team subsequently placed David into a medically induced coma and airlifted him to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

In recounting his experience, he added, “My body kept shutting down and I was very confused. The decision was made to put me into a coma and get me to hospital quickly.”

David expressed his gratitude, saying, “Those men and women deserve every bit of recognition we can give them. It’s fantastic donations like this that help keep them in the sky – and people like me at home with their families. Each one of them is a hero to me, and if my story can help in any way, then it’s the least I can do.”
