Viral TikToker Spreads Joy Among London Underground Commuters with Coffee Surprise

A TikTok user has garnered significant attention for brewing fresh coffee on the London Underground, providing a delightful pick-me-up for tired commuters. Samuel Netherton, a 22-year-old actuarial science student from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, is currently on a placement year in London, where he discovered his passion for coffee and honed his brewing skills. Driven by the joy of human connections that often accompany a good cup of coffee, Samuel began to seek out ways to share this experience more broadly, aiming to brighten the days of those around him.

With guidance from friends experienced in social media content creation, Samuel decided to merge his love for video production with his coffee-making pursuits. He started documenting his adventures on TikTok under the handle @samsroamingcafe, posting videos of himself serving complimentary coffees on the Northern Line. His latest clip has already attracted nearly 500,000 views, sparking interest in his unique approach to coffee service.

Innovative Coffee Experience in Unusual Locations

Samuel expressed a desire to explore unconventional locations for his pop-up coffee shop, with long-term ambitions of owning his own café. In an interview, he reflected on the inspiration behind his Underground coffee venture, which arose from a whimsical consideration of the most unusual café setting in London. Initially, his friends were sceptical about the feasibility of his idea, but Samuel remained undeterred.

Despite facing initial resistance from busy commuters, Samuel soon found that many were eager to queue for their caffeine fix during their travels across the city. “After some research and investing in a generator—which was a bit of a financial stretch for me—I set up shop on the Tube, and the response has been fantastic,” he remarked. “At first, we received some disapproving looks; people likely thought I was doing something odd. In those moments, you can either retreat or rise to the challenge, which is what I chose to do.”

Samuel’s determination paid off, as he soon welcomed his first customer. The moment he served a coffee, interest soared, and the carriage quickly filled with eager patrons. “The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and it was wonderful to see people smiling—this was a key reason for initiating the venture,” he noted.

Embarking on a Journey Along the Wild Atlantic Way

Next, Samuel plans to take his mobile coffee operation to the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, accompanied by school friends. His car boot has been ingeniously converted into a makeshift café. A significant aspect of his series will involve capturing the conversations that take place over coffee while documenting his journey towards establishing his own café, all set against the backdrop of Ireland’s breathtaking scenery.

“I am incredibly excited about the upcoming adventures and all the diverse locations where I will be making coffee,” Samuel shared. “I look forward to recording meaningful interactions with people and tracking the process of hopefully opening my own coffee shop one day. Many people appreciate seeing the journey unfold from the very beginning.”

Discussing his ambitious ideas for future locations, Samuel mentioned a particularly bold concept: setting up a coffee shop aboard an aircraft. “I’ve considered the logistics of serving coffee on a plane, which could be quite challenging,” he admitted. “However, when we first proposed the Tube idea, people thought it was impossible, so who knows what we might achieve next?”

In addition to his other ventures, Samuel is also contemplating converting his university house garage into a coffee shop, aiming to create an authentic café atmosphere. “There is still a bit of work to be done on that front, but it could potentially be my next venue,” he concluded, leaving the door open for further innovative ideas in the world of coffee service.
