His Majesty has expressed his satisfaction in appointing Mr Nicholas Charrington, DL, as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Essex, following the retirement of Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, CVO, on 2nd December 2026.
Career Highlights and Community Engagement
Mr Charrington, aged 65, has previously served as High Sheriff and brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He currently holds the position of President of the Rural Community Council of Essex and acts as a Trustee for the Fowler, Smith and Jones Charity, which provides grants to various organisations throughout the county. In addition, he co-founded Wild Arts, an initiative dedicated to staging operas in diverse venues across the nation, with a particular focus on engaging children through outreach programmes.
His extensive background includes serving as the founding Chair of the Essex Farm Attractions Network and Chair of the Essex Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group. Moreover, he has been an active committee member of the Essex Rural Development Commission, contributing significantly to the development and support of rural communities.
Personal Life and Contributions
Nick Charrington resides with his wife, Sheila, near Colchester, at Layer Marney Tower, a well-known visitor attraction that also serves as a venue for numerous charity events. Sheila has been instrumental in promoting local crafts, having established the Essex Crafts Society and the marketing body Essex Houses and Gardens. Together, they have raised four adult children, contributing to the vibrant community in Essex.
