Speeding Hit-and-Run Driver Confesses to Fatal East London Crash, Resulting in One Death and Two Injured Children

A driver involved in a hit-and-run incident has confessed to colliding with another vehicle while exceeding the speed limit, resulting in the tragic death of one man and injuries to two children. Blerim Manallari, a 24-year-old Albanian national, was recorded travelling at speeds of over 60mph on a 20mph stretch of Hoe Street in Walthamstow, east London, prior to the fatal incident that occurred on 24 March 2024.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Manallari had attempted to overtake another vehicle on a bend when he collided with a Vauxhall Polo. The driver of the Polo, 20-year-old Abdul Hasseeb Akram, sustained fatal injuries, while two 16-year-old cousins who were passengers in the vehicle also suffered serious injuries.

Admission of Guilt in Court

On Thursday, Manallari appeared in Court One at the Old Bailey, where he entered a guilty plea to charges of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Additionally, he admitted to driving the Mercedes without the owner’s consent, failing to stop at the scene of the accident, and operating a vehicle without a valid licence or insurance.

Judge Nigel Lickley KC postponed sentencing until 1 October, cautioning Manallari that a significant custodial sentence awaited him. The court heard that the defendant, who resides in Tower Hamlets, east London, had maintained a previously good character during his eight years in the UK. Despite the gravity of the situation, Judge Lickley granted him conditional bail until the sentencing date.
