Four training initiatives in Barnsley are to receive over £800,000 in funding to integrate practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills into everyday workplaces. The AI Upskilling Challenge Fund aims to provide support in critical areas such as frontline healthcare, local construction, and small businesses.
The successful projects from this Tech Town pilot could establish a national model for equipping the next generation across the UK with essential AI skills.
On Tuesday, 3 November, it was announced that frontline care staff, builders, and mothers returning to work in Barnsley will benefit from practical AI training through these newly funded projects. The initiatives will introduce problem-solving tools directly to hospital wards, construction sites, and small businesses.
Training Initiatives and Their Impact
Four organisations have been selected to implement this hands-on training, which focuses on delivering practical outcomes that enhance efficiency, build confidence, and improve employability:
Barnsley College will deploy mobile AI training units to provide practical sessions for hospital and social care staff, as well as the wider community, aimed at building confidence and supporting career development.
Atheni will assist 140 individuals, primarily those aged 40 and above, working in six manufacturing, engineering, and construction firms in Barnsley. The training will involve tailoring AI applications to the specific documentation and trade contexts of each company, aiding in tasks such as quotes, tenders, and safety paperwork.
Fossu (Ignite AI), in collaboration with Barnsley YMCA, Postnatal Minds, and Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, will facilitate challenge-led programmes and buildathons for 100 residents. This initiative aims to empower women returning to the workforce and young individuals to utilise AI in addressing real challenges faced by local businesses and communities.
Optimise Cyber Solutions, in partnership with Abbeydale Training, will support twenty small businesses in Barnsley in adopting AI safely and effectively. This collaboration aims to enhance training in digital skills and responsible AI usage, enabling businesses to progress from basic awareness to practical implementation, thereby improving productivity and fostering the development of future female AI leaders.
Government Commitment to AI Skills Development
The pilots are part of the Barnsley Tech Town initiative, underscoring the government’s commitment to transforming public services and skills delivery. By fostering collaboration between central and local government, this initiative empowers local communities and ensures that AI training is tailored to meet Barnsley’s specific economic requirements.
The AI Minister expressed understanding of public concerns regarding AI’s implications for employment and assured that the government is committed to guiding individuals through this evolving technological landscape. The supported schemes in Barnsley are intended to set a precedent for equipping individuals from diverse backgrounds with the necessary skills and confidence to thrive in a changing work environment.
Furthermore, the Minister for the Future of Work highlighted the importance of ensuring that workers, regardless of their profession, comprehend the potential impact of AI on their roles and possess the skills to shape its application in their workplaces.
Barnsley’s Tech Town Vision
Barnsley was designated the UK’s first Tech Town in February, exemplifying how AI can enhance daily life through improved public services, strengthened local businesses, and new job opportunities. The programme will collaborate with local educational institutions, employers, and the NHS to identify effective strategies that could be replicated nationwide, ensuring that communities across Britain benefit from AI advancements.
The Cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets at Barnsley Council emphasised that Tech Town is about harnessing technology for the benefit of local residents and businesses. The funding will facilitate the direct implementation of practical AI support in workplaces and communities, helping individuals enhance their skills for current and future employment.
Other initiatives under the Tech Town umbrella are also focused on preparing Barnsley residents for the workforce and exploring ways to enhance local healthcare services. The AI Career Launchpad will provide six months of training and paid work placements through Barnsley College. The Getting Job Ready with AI pilot aims to assist jobseekers in securing roles, refining applications, and preparing for interviews. Additionally, Barnsley Hospital is testing how AI can improve patient care, minimise missed appointments, and streamline administrative tasks for staff.
Wider AI Skills Initiatives Across the UK
Nationally, numerous workers and young individuals will gain opportunities to develop their skills and engage with the tech sector. The government’s AI Skills Boost initiative aims to equip 10 million UK workers with vital AI skills by 2030. Furthermore, an additional 10,000 work experience placements are planned to facilitate young people’s entry into the digital and tech sectors over the next three years.
Local communities will also receive enhanced support to leverage AI for their benefit. Building on Barnsley’s experience, the recent Budget announced a £30 million investment for three regional Mayors in Yorkshire to implement AI solutions tailored to their communities.
The government is also funding research to explore the implications of AI on employment and living standards, with an additional £23 million allocated over three years to support the AI Economics Institute, the world’s first government-backed research institution dedicated to examining AI’s impact on productivity, growth, and the broader economy.
Voices from the Initiative
The Principal and CEO of Barnsley College noted the essential role of health and social care staff, stating that the college is making it easier for them to acquire AI skills relevant to their roles. By providing flexible and practical training both in workplaces and the community, the initiative aims to enhance individuals’ confidence regarding the use of AI in their daily tasks.
The CEO of Optimise Cyber Solutions remarked on the significant opportunities AI presents for small businesses, acknowledging the challenges they face in effectively and safely utilising this technology. The collaboration with Abbeydale Training aims to empower local businesses to leverage AI as a practical tool for increased productivity and opportunity creation.
The CEO of Ignite AI expressed enthusiasm for delivering practical, hands-on AI training, particularly for women returning to the workforce and young people. This initiative will enable participants to tackle real challenges posed by local employers.
The co-founder of Atheni highlighted the potential of AI to alleviate repetitive tasks, asserting the importance of combining human judgement with technology to maximise effectiveness. The collaboration in Barnsley is anticipated to yield valuable insights that could benefit businesses across the country.
In total, over £800,000 has been allocated to the four successful delivery partners, with funding distributed as follows:
- Atheni Strategy Limited: £231,000
- Optimise Cyber Solutions Limited: £200,000
- Fossu Limited: £195,188

The AI Upskilling Challenge Fund, announced in July, aims to identify and support innovative organisations capable of delivering practical AI training to underserved groups in Barnsley. This fund is part of the broader Barnsley Tech Town initiative, launched on 3 February 2026, which seeks to establish Barnsley as the UK’s first government-backed Tech Town.
The Tech Town initiative supports Barnsley 2030, the local council’s long-term vision for a prosperous, inclusive, and equitable borough.
